Conducted by the ATO Foreign Investments Program, this free information session provides legal practitioners with an introduction to the new Register of Foreign Ownership of Australian Assets – Part 7A of the Foreign Acquisitions and Takeovers Act 1975 – which commences on 1 July 2023), the ATO’s online services for foreign investors platform and other law the ATO administers that is specific to foreign investors investing in Australian land and other assets.
The ATO states that with all Australian commercial and residential land being added to the new Register, conveyancers and legal professionals specialising in this area have a key role in providing advice to their clients in this regard.
Learn about the statutory obligations that foreign investors have to apply for foreign investment approval, and the registration obligations under new law known as the Register of Foreign Ownership of Australian Assets which commenced on 1 July 2023. The Foreign Acquisitions and Takeovers Act 1975, in particular Part 7A will commence by proclamation on 1 July 2023.
The ATO’s new secure online platform for foreign investors which went live on 26 June 2023 is introduced. This can be used by all foreign investors and their representatives to meet their foreign investment ATO obligations.

About the Presenter:
Mr Chris Frith is a government lawyer who has extensive experience in law and policy within the ATO. He is currently the manager of the Law and Policy team in the Foreign Investment Program. The Law and Policy team is responsible for the provision of legal advice in respect the elements of the foreign investment law and policy administered by the ATO, including the new Register of Foreign Owned Australian Assets.
