Mr Chris Groves is joined by a chartered accountant and insolvency specialist to workshop the practicalities of insolvency and liquidation in a commercial tenancy context (including practical steps to dealing with bankrupt tenants or landlords and the legal / business issues that arise). The discussion includes dealing with supply contracts; relevant recent changes to insolvency laws; powers and obligations of liquidators when dealing with property and contractual matters; and disclaiming leases. This session was delivered as part of the Property and Commercial Law Conference 2018.

About the Presenter:

Mr Chris Groves practises across a wide range of commercial and related disputes, with a focus on company and partnership disputes, insolvency law, building and construction disputes, trust disputes, property disputes, and recovery actions. He regularly acts for and against insolvency practitioners, developers and property owners, government bodies, large and small builders, shareholders, and insurers. Chris regularly appears in many of Tasmania’s courts and tribunals. He has a reputation for strong commercial judgment and tailored problem solving. Chris is an adjudicator under the Security of Payment legislation in TAS, NSW and QLD, and has adjudicated hundreds of construction payment disputes in this role since 2010. Shortly after beginning in the law Chris also completed the University of Southern Queensland/Insolvency Practitioners Association post-graduate insolvency course.

Mr Barry Hamilton is Principal at Barry Hamilton & Associates in Hobart. Mr Hamilton is a chartered accountant and insolvency practitioner. He commenced the business in 2000 which is entirely devoted to insolvency and forensic issues, and finding solutions for both creditors and stakeholders. His areas of expertise are: corporate recovery and turnaround management, corporate administration, corporate receivership and litigations support and forensic analysis.
