Description
This is one in a series of sessions presented by Grant Blake, Clinical Psychologist, Grant Blake Psychology (Qld). In this session, Grant will provide lawyers with an opportunity to consider the challenges inherent to evaluating fitness to stand trial in Tasmania. Grant will also provide an overview key findings from five research projects undertaken at the Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science in Melbourne. Grant will discuss the development of a useful tool, Australian and New Zealand Evaluation of Fitness to Stand Trial (revised), which is a tool that integrates research findings from law, psychology and psychiatry, thus resulting in a robust evaluation of fitness to stand trial. The research projects include: analysis of international fitness to stand trial assessment procedures; review of fitness to stand trial appeals in Australia; analysis of fitness reports submitted to the court in Victoria; and, determination of what constitutes a basic factual understanding of trials in a large Australian sample.
