Update to the Profession – 29 May 2024

  • I am aware that the deadline is approaching at the end of this month in relation to whether the Commonwealth government will commit to providing funding to enable construction of a fifth Court as part of the Burnie Court Complex to be used for family law cases. I have written to the Commonwealth Attorney General emphasising the importance of this for Tasmania. I have also been in communication with Chief Justice Alstergren of the Federal Circuit & Family Court of Australia and the State Attorney General.
  • The Executive Director, Luke Rheinberger, and I will be attending a further justice forum to be convened by the Honourable Mr Guy Barnett, Attorney General on 3 June 2024.
  • I want to thank Will Justo, Amelia Higgs, and Imogen Cooke for their assistance in attending the Southern Catholic Schools Career Expo on behalf of the Law Society on 23 May 2024. Engaging and having discussions with young people about their options in the law is important. Representatives from the Law Society will attend the Career Expo hosted by Hutchins and Collegiate in late June 2024. I have also been in contact with the northern independent schools and have put forward an expression of interest for the Law Society to be able to attend their Career Expo from 2025 onwards. This is all part of our objective of trying to engage with students while they are at school, so they are aware of options available to them, including the different universities, working, and being able to stay in the north and the northwest. If members become aware of other opportunities available to enable us to share information, then I would welcome that information being passed on to me.
  • The Law Society fundraising for the Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout, which I will take part in on 20 June 2024 is now well underway. Patrick O’Halloran has registered and will join our Law Society team. Together we have raised about $1,100.00. I remind practitioners and firms that you can donate to show your support to the Law Society on the following link: https://www.ceosleepout.org.au/fundraisers/JuliaHiggins/Tasmania
