Description

The National President of AUSIT, J. Angelo Berbotto, presents a very engaging and informative session on working with interpreters. This session includes valuable input from local interpreters who work with the legal profession. Contemporary Australia is a multi-cultural landscape and lawyers must be ready to adapt and work comfortably with interpreters as communication is key in any legal environment. This workshop will help you navigate those times when you find you need an interpreter for your clients whether it be in court, working with the police, or simply preparing material in the best and most practical way possible for the most successful outcome.

The following will be considered:

  • The differences between translating and interpreting
  • The different modes of interpreting and their use in legal settings
  • How to tell when you need an interpreter
  • What you need to know before you book an interpreter
  • Which interpreter to book and why
  • What the interpreter needs to know to help you communicate with your client (hearing and context)

Key takeaways include:

  • Learning about the Australian framework for linguists (interpreters and translators) and the requirements to work in this area.
  • Gaining insight into the intricacies of interpreted communication.
  • Being more knowledgeable about the challenges to interpreting and learn how you can make it easier for you, your client and the interpreter.
  • Empowered and confident on working successfully with non-English speaking clients who need the assistance of interpreters.
  • CPD Points: 2 [PS] [EW]
  • Price: $149.00
  • Area: People Skills & Management; Social Security / Welfare Matters
